CFA Exam Day Tips: What to Carry & Expect

The CFA exam day is not merely a test of your knowledge; it is also a test of your preparedness, your discipline, and your ability to perform under pressure. Having guided numerous candidates through the CFA Program—many of whom have successfully cleared Level I on their first attempt—I, Harmeet Hora, an IIT-IIM alumnus and CFA charterholder, have observed that understanding the logistical details of exam day is as critical as mastering the curriculum.

This post will provide you with a definitive guide on what to carry, what to avoid, and precisely what to expect when you step into the exam hall. My objective is to eliminate any surprises, allowing you to focus solely on demonstrating your understanding.

1. Your CFA Exam Day Checklist: What to Carry

Preparation for exam day extends beyond your study materials. It includes ensuring you have the correct, approved items ready. Any deviation can lead to unnecessary stress or even disqualification.

Here is what you absolutely must carry:

• Valid International Passport: This is the single most important item. The CFA Institute requires a government-issued international passport as your primary form of identification. They do not accept state government-issued IDs like the Aadhaar card. Ensure your passport is valid and current. You will not be allowed to sit for the exam without it.
• CFA Approved Calculator: You are permitted to bring one of two specific financial calculators:
  • Texas Instruments BA II Plus (including the Professional model)
  • Hewlett Packard 12C (including the Platinum, Prestige, and 25th Anniversary Edition models) These are the only calculators allowed. Bringing any other model, even a scientific calculator, will result in its confiscation. I recommend purchasing your calculator well in advance and becoming proficient with it. • Confirmation of Appointment: While not always explicitly checked at every step, having a printout or digital copy of your exam appointment confirmation can resolve any potential administrative discrepancies swiftly. It is always wise to be over-prepared.
• Eyeglasses: If you wear glasses, ensure you bring them. Contact lenses are also permissible.

That is it. Keep your required items minimal and simple.

2. What is Strictly Not Allowed in the Exam Hall

The CFA Institute maintains strict protocols to ensure fairness and prevent any form of cheating. Understanding these prohibitions is crucial.

You must leave the following items outside the exam room:

• Personal Watches: All types of watches—digital, analog, smartwatches—are strictly forbidden. The exam interface on the computer will display a timer, so you do not need your own.
• Jewellery: Beyond a simple wedding ring for married women, no other jewellery is permitted. This includes necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and any other accessories.
• Bags and Personal Belongings: Your backpack, handbag, mobile phone, smart devices, notes, textbooks, and any other personal items must be stored in designated lockers or areas outside the exam room. Access to these items is typically restricted during the exam sessions.
• Food and Beverages: You may not bring your own food or drinks into the exam room. Water is provided by the test center, and you will have a break during which you can consume energy bars or light snacks.
• Personal Scratch Paper or Pens: The test center will provide you with all necessary writing materials. You cannot use your own.

Adhere to these rules without exception. Any violation can lead to immediate dismissal and potential voiding of your exam results.

3. Navigating the Computer-Based Test (CBT) Format

The CFA exam is a computer-based test (CBT), which means your experience will be different from traditional pen-and-paper exams. Understanding this format is vital for effective time management and reducing anxiety.

Here is what you can expect:

• Online Exam Interface: You will take the exam on a computer. The interface is user-friendly, but familiarity with it through practice tests is highly recommended.
• One Question at a Time: Questions appear one by one on your screen. You will read the question and select your answer choice (A, B, or C).
• Navigation and Flagging: You have the ability to move between questions freely within a session. If you encounter a difficult question, you can “flag” it and return to it later. This is a critical feature for effective time management. Do not get stuck on one question; skip it and come back if time permits. • No Negative Marking: This is excellent news. There is no penalty for incorrect answers. Therefore, you must attempt every single question. Even if you are unsure, make an educated guess using the elimination method. Leaving a question blank is a missed opportunity.
• Stress Test Questions: The CFA Institute designs some questions to be more challenging and time-consuming. These are often referred to as “stress test” questions. They are intended to assess your ability to manage pressure and not panic when faced with a difficult problem. If a question takes significantly longer than 1.5 minutes, make a quick judgment: can you solve it with a bit more effort, or is it better to flag it and move on?
• Scratch Paper and Pens: You will be provided with one A4 sheet of white paper for your calculations and notes. You may use both the front and back of this sheet. If you fill it up, you can request an unlimited number of replacements from the proctors. A pen will also be provided.
• Unlimited Water: The test center provides water, and you can request refills as needed. However, I recommend moderating your fluid intake during the actual exam sessions to minimize the need for washroom breaks.

4. Understanding the Exam Structure and Timing

The CFA Level I exam is designed to be comprehensive, covering a broad range of topics. Knowing the structure helps you pace yourself effectively.

• Total Exam Duration: The entire exam experience spans 5.5 hours of testing time, split into two distinct sessions.
• Two Sessions: The exam is divided into a morning session and an afternoon session.
• Session Length: Each session is 2 hours and 15 minutes long (135 minutes).
• Number of Questions: Each session consists of 90 multiple-choice questions. Therefore, you will answer a total of 180 questions across the entire exam.
• Average Time Per Question: With 90 questions in 135 minutes, you have an average of 1.5 minutes per question. This average includes the “stress test” questions that may take longer, so you must move efficiently through the easier ones.
• Question Format: All questions are multiple-choice with three answer options (A, B, C).
• Topic Coverage: All 10 CFA Level I topics are tested in both the morning and afternoon sessions. The CFA Institute ensures a balanced distribution across the curriculum, checking for your overall understanding rather than focusing on specific topics in one session. This includes areas like Quantitative Methods, Financial Statement Analysis, Equity Investments, and Ethics.

5. The All-Important Break and Staying Energized

Between the morning and afternoon sessions, you will have a mandatory break. How you utilize this time can significantly impact your performance in the second half of the exam.

• Break Duration: The break is 30 minutes long.
• Optional, but Recommended: While technically optional, I strongly recommend you take this break. Your brain will have processed 90 complex questions, and it needs a reset.
• Purpose of the Break: This is not a time for last-minute studying. Do not pull out notes or try to cram. The purpose is to recharge your mental and physical energy.
• What to Do During the Break:
  • Eat: Bring a protein bar, some chocolate, or a handful of nuts. These provide quick, sustained energy without making you feel heavy.
  • Hydrate: Drink some water.
  • Stretch: Get up, walk around, and stretch. This helps with blood circulation and reduces stiffness.
  • Mental Reset: Step away from the exam mindset for a few minutes. Clear your head. Do not dwell on questions from the first session; you cannot change them now. Focus your energy on the upcoming session.
• Washroom Breaks During Sessions: You may take a washroom break during an active exam session, but be aware that the clock does not stop. You will also need to sign out and sign back in, which consumes valuable time. It is best to minimize these interruptions by managing your fluid intake before and during the exam.

6. My Personal Take: Beyond the Logistics

Having mentored hundreds of candidates, I can share some insights that go beyond the rules and regulations.

Second, manage your stress. The CFA Institute deliberately includes questions designed to test your resilience. When you encounter a question that seems impossible or takes too long, do not panic. Flag it, move on, and return if you have time. Your ability to maintain composure is a critical skill.

Third, prioritize your well-being. While one of my mentees, after clearing Level I, shared that he went for a run at 5 AM on exam day and did not sleep much, I strongly recommend a different approach. Ensure you get a good night’s sleep before the exam. Adequate rest will significantly improve your focus, recall, and decision-making abilities. Your brain is your most important tool on exam day.

Finally, remember that the CFA charter is a marathon, not a sprint. Every decision you make, from your study habits to your exam day strategy, contributes to your long-term career trajectory. Approach exam day with confidence, knowing you have prepared diligently.
